EFL club confirm contract talks with star weeks after suffering heart attack as nine released

AFC Wimbledon are in discussions to extend Sam Hutchinson’s contract just weeks after he suffered a heart attack during a game.

Hutchinson was rushed to hospital following the Dons’ 1-0 win over Grimsby Town in the final game of the League Two regular season on May 3.

The Chelsea youth product scored the only goal in the contest which also helped secure Wimbledon’s spot in the League Two play-offs.

Hutchinson was treated and assessed in Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital in Nottingham where he also underwent heart surgery.

The 35-year-old first complained of chest problems during his post-match interview at Blundell Park.

“To be fair, I felt like rubbish during the game for some reason,” Hutchinson said.

“I had a really tight chest.

“I wanted to come off in the first six minutes but I had to battle on like an old warhorse.”

But it wasn’t until he got to the hospital when he learned he suffered a heart attack during the contest.

“I broke down when they told me in the hospital because playing football is all I ever want to do,” Hutchinson said.

“I didn’t care that I had a heart attack, I’m not really like that.”

Hutchinson added: “Obviously the whole incident wasn’t nice for my family but for me personally, I just see it as another injury. It’s another hurdle for me to overcome.”

Although Hutchinson played no part in the Dons’ play-off run, which culminated in a 1-0 victory over Walsall in the play-off final to secure promotion to League One, he may pull on the shirt once again.

Wimbledon also confirmed they remain in talks to extend forward Marcus Browne’s deal and have tabled contract offers to Ryan Johnson, Josh Neufville and James Tilley.

The club have triggered the option to extend Isaac Ogundere’s deal.

However, they announced the departures of nine players as Dons director of football Craig Cope thanked them for their efforts.

“It’s always hard saying goodbye to players at the end of the season, but it is especially tough this year as we say goodbye and thank you to some incredible people and families who have truly impacted this club,” Cope said. “Our promotion is not a one season piece of work, it has been nearly three years in the making.

“Not only being fantastic teammates but impacting on the pitch as well.”

Cope also thanked James Furlong, Owen Goodman, Joe Pigott and Alistair Smith, who finished their loan stints and will return to their parent clubs.
