Gabby Agbonlahor believes Aston Villa had a better season than Arsenal – despite missing out on Champions League qualification.
The talkSPORT co-host – and Villans icon – has graded both clubs’ seasons along with several other Premier League sides.
Villa and Arsenal both featured in this season’s Champions League, with Paris Saint-Germain defeating them in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.
Meanwhile, Unai Emery‘s side finished sixth in the league and reached the last four of the FA Cup.
Although Villa have secured a third consecutive European campaign, they will only compete in the Europa League next term.
It comes after they finished below Newcastle on goal difference following a defeat to Manchester United on the final day.
Emery saw his side controversially denied a goal at 0-0 in that match last weekend.
However, Agbonlahor is adamant his former club had a memorable season, telling talkSPORT Drive: “So Aston Villa finished in sixth position. Missed out on Champions League on only goal difference and a refereeing howler.
“Got to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Unfortunately, coming off (worst) against the winners, Crystal Palace, very strong team.”
“Also an outstanding Champions League run. Some great results. I think after four games, hadn’t conceded a goal.
“So, I’m going to give Aston Villa a ‘B’.”
Explaining his decision, he added: “Chelsea will see this season, so will Spurs, playing in the Champions League and then going sometimes three days later takes a lot out of the players.

As for the Gunners, who finished second for a third consecutive season, Agbonlahor expected more.
Mikel Arteta once again missed out on silverware, with the club’s major trophy drought stretching back to 2020.
As a result, Agbonlahor revealed: “Semi-finals in the Champions League, zero trophies again under Arteta. Spent £100million last transfer window. I’m going to give Arsenal a ‘C’.”
After co-host Andy Goldstein queried that Villa had finished lower than last season, Agnonlahor continued: “I’m going off this season and also I’m judging these clubs and managers off Arsenal’s standards as well.
“Arsenal should be getting to the semi-finals in the Champions League. They should be winning the Premier League. They’re not, they’re missing out.”
Despite his criticism of Arteta’s side, Arsenal were not the lowest graded side by Agbonlahor.
The former striker refused to give a grade to United, instead issuing a ‘U’, meaning ‘unclassified’, after their worst season for 50 years.
United’s 15th place finish was their lowest since promotion back to the top-flight in 1975.
Agbonlahor labelled the Red Devils’ campaign ‘abysmal’ as he explained: “Manchester United, they have got from me, they’ve got a ‘U’. Unclassified.
“Finishing 15th in the league, 18 defeats in the Premier League, a -10 goal difference, they didn’t win a trophy this season. Abysmal season for Manchester United.”
Ruben Amorim missed out on a trophy after guiding United to the Europa League final.
Agbonlahor has labelled United’s season under Amorim ‘abysmal’GettyHis side were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao to deny the Red Devils a place in next season’s Champions League.
It means United will be without European football for the first time in 11 seasons.
For Spurs, who ended in 17th spot – their lowest Premier League finish while also mustering their most defeats with 22 in a single season, they received a ‘C’.
Giving his reasoning, he stated that ending their 17-year trophy drought in the form of the Europa League warranted them a pass.
Goldstein wasn’t having it, declaring they had a better season than Villa after they ended up lifting his trophy.
To which Agbonlahor remarked: “It’s not just about the cup competitions, Spurs finished in 17th place and had 22 Premier League defeats.
Spurs received a ‘C’ grade, despite winning the Europa LeagueGetty“No team has ever not been relegated [with that many losses.] Spurs, well done, a successful season.”
As for the champions Liverpool, they were awarded an ‘A’ for scooping their second Premier League title in five years, but missed out on an ‘A*’ for ‘taking their foot off the gas’ after they wrapped up the championship.
Manchester City, who had won the Premier League title in the previous four seasons, were given a ‘D’ for finishing third, while also losing in the FA Cup final and crashing out of the European Cup in the knockout phase play-off.
Moving onto Chelsea, who scooped Conference League glory and secured Champions League football by coming in fourth, they received a ‘B’ grade.
Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford were then graded ‘C’ for finishing eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.
