Manchester City are reportedly interested in adding Pep Lijnders to Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff.

Lijnders already boasts Premier League experience having worked at Liverpool across two spells with Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman helped Klopp win the Premier League and Champions League at the Reds before they left at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Lijnders then became the manager at Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, although spent just seven months there before leaving.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the 42-year-old is in contention to join City as assistant to Guardiola.

Juanma Lillo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Vicens have left the club’s staff following the end of the season.

Guardiola therefore has some gaps in his backroom team, but one of those could soon be filled should City welcome Liverpool’s ex-coach.

Lijnders was lauded by Klopp when their Anfield exits were confirmed last year following such a successful partnership on the touchline.

“The most influential guy in the last years definitely in this club was Pep Lijnders,” Klopp said.

“The job he did is absolutely exceptional. The inspiration he is for me is absolutely exceptional.”

A move to City would see Lijnders return for a third Premier League stint, at a club who became one of Liverpool’s most fierce rivals.

Guardiola’s side have beaten the Reds to the title by just one point on two separate occasions during his tenure.

However, it’s Liverpool who were crowned champions this season as City endured an unexpectedly poor campaign.

They finished third in the table but dropped out of the title race months before the run-in had even begun.

City also suffered early exits in the Champions League and Carabao Cup before losing in the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace.

Whilst the season won’t live long in their memories, there is still an opportunity for them to win silverware in the summer.

City will travel to the United States for the Club World Cup as one of two English sides alongside Chelsea.

Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus are their opponents in Group G, with the tournament getting underway on June 14.
