Kevin O’Sullivan wants his Florida squad to be confident in themselves heading into the NCAA Tournament.
The Gators learned on Selection Monday that they will be heading to Conway, South Carolina. UF is the 2-seed of the Conway Regional hosted by Coastal Carolina, the No. 13 overall seed.
For Florida, it’s another year without hosting a Regional in Gainesville. But it’s quite the accomplishment that the Gators made the NCAA Tournament and were in the conversation to host ahead of the SEC Tournament.
O’Sullivan wants his squad to reflect on the incredible turnaround it took to secure a spot in the field of 64. It traditionally takes winning at least 13 of 30 regular-season SEC games to receive an NCAA Tournament bid. The Gators had only 1 victory in their first 12 conference contests.
I told the team at the end, ‘You probably need to take some time to reflect back on what justhappened,’” O’Sullivan said Monday, per Jackson Castellano of the Orlando Sentinel. “Just to be 1-11 and end up at 15 wins in the league, no one’s ever done that since the league expanded [in 1992].
The Conway Regional includes Florida, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Fairfield. UF will open against ECU on Friday.
The Regional round is double elimination. If they can avoid picking up 2 losses over the weekend (Friday-Monday), the Gators will advance to a Super Regional paired with the winner of the Auburn Regional.
Florida managed to to just that over the final 6 weekends of the SEC regular season, going 14-4 to pick up series wins over Mizzou, Mississippi State, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas and Alabama. Four of those teams made the NCAA Tournament, including 2 national seeds (No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Arkansas).
UF was the surprise story of last year’s NCAA Tournament as a bubble team that barely managed to make the field of 64 and then went on the road to win the Stillwater Regional and Clemson Super Regional to reach the College World Series. The Gators are hoping for similar success on the road in the 2025 postseason.
