90s Country Icon, 51, Thought Shed Never Perform Again After Gruesome Injury

Country music star Gretchen Wilson suffered a gruesome injury that left her wheelchair bound for several weeks. In a new interview with Taste of Country Nights, Wilson shared that she "shattered" her leg while dancing at a wedding — with a 6-year-old.

"We were just doing a 'Ring Around the Rosie,' actually. We were at a wedding reception and it was on the beach, so they had thrown one of those Astroturf carpeting things over the sand," she said, adding, "doing the spin at 100MPH and my ankle hit one of those pockets."

"It was ugly/ You seen those vides online with the foot hanging the wrong way, it was one of those. Once I went down, I did not get back up," Wilson, 51, continued.

She wasn't sure she'd ever be able to perform again."It was a setback for quite a while," she said.

However, Wilson said that when got the call to appear on The Masked Singer, she agreed. Though she admits doing the show was a challenge, she said it was "really good for" her overall.

Of course, Wilson went on to win the competition show — and fans would never know that she had been injured just months prior.

"Big Shout out to MY favorite masked singer! @andygrammer - I got to Boogie with the Best," she captioned an Instagram post on May 9. Fans were overjoyed to see that Wilson was the star behind the costume.

"Impressed with the dance moves sis! From the moment you sang the first note I knew it was you! Only one voice like that! Congratulations," one person commented on her post.

"You and Andy Grammer has been one of the most talented final two rounds in the show’s entire history! I would’ve been fine with either winning but I was cheering for you the most, Gretchen! Again, congratulations on your win," someone else wrote.

A couple of weeks later, Wilson shared that she's going to be going on a country music cruise in 2026, performing with other country music stars, including Tracy Lawrence, Jo Dee Messina and Chase Rice.

Wilson also has several upcoming shows listed on her website.
