Sports Digest: UHS Wildcats athletes shine, 18 advance to Redwood Empire Championships

Ukiah, CA — The spirit of competition and community came alive last week at Ukiah High School as student-athletes from across the region converged for the 2025 North Bay League Track and Field Championships. Over the course of two beautiful spring afternoons, Ukiah welcomed ten high schools from Sonoma County for an unforgettable display of athleticism, teamwork, and school pride.

The event marked the final meet of the season for junior varsity athletes, who filled every event – from discus and pole vault to sprints and hurdles – with enthusiasm and determination. These future stars of the sport demonstrated developing skill and strong team spirit as they competed under the stadium lights.

For varsity athletes, the meet served as a high-stakes qualifier for the upcoming Redwood Empire Championships in Fortuna. The top six athletes in each varsity event earned the right to advance, and Ukiah High is proud to announce that 18 Wildcat athletes qualified, representing all 16 track and field events, with several athletes qualifying in multiple disciplines.

While the team titles went to Analy High School (boys) and Maria Carrillo High School (girls), Ukiah’s varsity teams held their own, finishing 5th in the boys’ division and 6th in the girls’ division, just a few points away from a top-three finish.

“Our athletes showed grit, heart, and Wildcat pride,” said Ukiah High School Track & Field Coach Jaime Connerton. “Competing against some of the strongest programs in the North Bay, they proved they belong among the best.”

With more than 50 athletes competing across JV and varsity, the scope of participation reflects the growth and depth of Ukiah’s track and field program. “I can hear the late Glenn Erickson’s gruff voice taking a crack at naming all the local athletes over those two days,” said Connerton. The team’s commitment to excellence, camaraderie, and sportsmanship was evident in every race, throw, and jump.

Photos from the event include tributes to graduating seniors and highlights of standout performances, capturing the vibrant energy of the sport often called “Athletics” around the world, an ancient and elemental celebration of strength, speed, and skill.

Full individual results and athlete highlights will be shared following the Redwood Empire Championships in Fortuna on Saturday, May 17.
