Directed by Joel Gilbert, the film chronicle’s Barr’s life story, including her challenging childhood in which she was raised Jewish in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In the movie, Barr reveals that she started telling jokes to make her father laugh to avoid punishment. Eventually, she landed on stage at a comedy club in Denver where her “Funny Womanness” routine earned her a local following.
From there, she moved to Los Angeles and started performing at The Comedy Store and soon was invited to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and landed a gig opening for singer Julio Iglesias. She appeared with Rodney Dangerfield in his 1986 HBO special as his wife and then soon got her own specials. Her success culminated with her own sitcom Roseanne, which became a rating smash but had the star fighting the show’s writers over story lines and characters.
However, her success eventually crumbled under the weight of several missteps, including an unfortunate performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a San Diego Padres game. She went on to host her own talk show, sharing controversial political views, but it all came crashing down after a late-night tweet she made while she claimed she was on Ambien. She was kicked off her own show and blacklisted by everyone except Fox News and Dr. Oz.
In the new documentary, Barr gives her side of the story through exclusive interviews as well as glimpses of her youth through photographs and home movies.
