Brazil hot air balloon crash kills 8, injures 13 after fire

The tragic hot air balloon crash in Praia Grande, Brazil, on June 21, 2025, has raised serious concerns regarding safety regulations in the burgeoning adventure tourism industry. The incident resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injuries to thirteen others when the balloon caught fire during flight . This catastrophic event occurred in Santa Catarina state, a well-known destination for hot air ballooning enthusiasts. The incident has prompted an immediate investigation by local authorities to ascertain the underlying causes of this disaster.

At least eight people died after a hot air balloon caught fire mid-air, forcing passengers to jump out of the basket to avoid the flames.

The fire occurred in the skies of Praia Grande — a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and a popular destination for hot air ballooning — on the morning of Saturday, June 21, according to Jorginho Mello, the state’s governor.

Three people died hugging each other, said Ulisses Gabriel, chief of Santa Catarina’s civil police force, on X. “It hurts the soul.”

Thirteen people survived and were taken to hospitals, Santa Catarina’s military fire brigade said, adding that 21 people were on board including the pilot.

Balloon tour company Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, which operated the flight, has now suspended its activities indefinitely.

It said it had complied with all regulations set by Anac and had had no prior history of accidents.

"Unfortunately, even with all necessary precautions and the efforts of our experienced pilot - who followed all recommended procedures and tried to save everyone on board - we are now faced with the pain caused by this tragedy," the company added.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the victims’ families and said the federal government was available to help with the investigation.

Last Sunday, another hot-air balloon crashed in Brazil’s state of São Paulo, killing one woman and injuring 11 others.

This crash is particularly alarming as it follows another recent incident in Sao Paulo state that resulted in one death and eleven injuries . Such recurrent tragedies underscore potential deficiencies in operational safety measures among hot air balloon operators. In response to the crash, Sobrevoar, the company responsible for operating the ill-fated balloon, has suspended its operations indefinitely while cooperating with ongoing investigations .

The governor of Santa Catarina expressed condolences to the victims' families and has mobilized resources for assistance . As adventure tourism continues to gain popularity worldwide, it is imperative that regulatory bodies enforce stringent safety protocols to prevent future incidents like this one. The need for comprehensive training and oversight is essential not only for protecting passengers but also for preserving public confidence in such recreational activities.
