DENVER (KDVR) — Denver has been experiencing a "fool's spring" with temperatures near 70 degrees, but as March is Colorado's snowiest month, a change is moving in for Friday.
The Mile High City has enjoyed several days of above-average temperatures, and even hit its second 70 degree day of the year, but nothing lasts forever during Colorado's spring season. The Pinpoint Weather team is tracking a winter storm that could bring snow, rain and gusty winds to the state.
While the impacts from the moisture will be minimal thanks to the recent heat, it will be a drastic shift from sunny and 70s to windy and rainy 50s. So, a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Friday.
Pinpoint Weather Alert Day on March 14This system is a result of a winter storm moving in from the west coast. Depending on the track the storm takes, it will impact the amount of moisture Colorado receives. Regardless, this will be a short-lived storm.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of Friday's incoming winter storm.
Timing
The change in weather is imminent, but according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels, this will be a quick moving system.
Thursday will be another mild day, with highs in the upper 60s. The shift moves in late Thursday with clouds and some light snow in the mountains.
Those clouds will increase through early Friday morning. Denver will see rain early to midmorning on Friday, before the storm leaves by the early afternoon. This storm may only last a few hours, but the shift will be noticeable.
Colorado's mountains will get some much needed snow that begins Thursday night and lingers through the day Friday. The snow will become lighter through the evening hours.
Totals
This quick-moving winter storm won't produce impressive totals for the metro due to the recent warm weather.
View the latest Weather Alerts in Denver and across Colorado on FOX31According to Michels, the metro will see mostly rain, but a few flakes are possible. The big story with this storm is that there will be lots of melting.
The Palmer Divide will see a swap to snow late Friday morning, but melting will happen immediately, and accumulation may only stick to grassy surfaces.
Here are the preliminary snow totals for Friday as of Wednesday morning:
Palmer Divide: Trace to an inch Eastern Plains and Interstate 70 corridor: Light coating Mountains: 3-8 inches with more expected on the passes Pinpoint Weather: Snow totals by March 16Pinpoint Weather: Snow totals by March 16This storm is great news for the high country, especially Colorado's southern mountains where drought conditions have worsened. Ski areas could also add a few inches of fresh powder to their runs.
Impacts
While this system won't feel like an impressive winter storm, the wind will have big impacts on the metro.
The lack of snow accumulation is rivaled by the strong wind. Michels said gusts up to 50 mph are possible out on the Eastern Plains, and Denver could see gusts between 30-40 mph. Winds will continue to increase through the afternoon as the moisture moves out.
