It’s Day 48 of the Chicago Bears offseason. There are few things I enjoy on a Saturday morning as much as a freshly baked (and properly buttered) biscuit.
The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue and Mike Jones cooked up a list of the NFL’s 50 biggest difference-makers under the age of 40. It is a collection of coaches, executives, and others “who significantly impact the NFL and will continue to do so in the coming decades.” On that list, you’ll find three Bears — Head Coach Ben Johnson, General Manager Ryan Poles, and Assistant GM Ian Cunningham. So if you’re looking for a way to spin the news that Cunningham didn’t get the Jacksonville Jaguars gig, you can do so by reminding yourself that the power trio running Chicago’s football team will be together for at least another year. Because I’m sure you’re curious, this is the snippet under the Bears’ assistant GM:Cunningham, a former University of Virginia offensive lineman who studied education and psychology, has put his expertise in those fields to use while rising through the NFL’s scouting and executive ranks since 2008. Cunningham has been a member of two powerhouse staffs: the Baltimore Ravens (2008-16) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2017-21) before good friend Ryan Poles coaxed him to Chicago to serve as assistant general manager. Cunningham, who had a lead role in drafting quarterback Caleb Williams last spring and in hiring new head coach Ben Johnson, has been a finalist for multiple GM openings over the last two seasons because he is knowledgeable, experienced and well-rounded between football, scouting and analytics departments.

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) February 22, 2025 Words from Fowler:“I’m told the Minnesota Vikings are open to doing a deal with Sam Darnold. People I’ve talked to around the league believe that the franchise tag is not the likeliest path Minnesota would take. That’s a high number of around $40 million. So Minnesota’s stance seems to be that they’re not going to mortgage the future for Sam Darnold. If he’s getting major bank with another team somewhere else, they probably won’t mortgage their future in that regard. But they’re certainly open to having him back. They loved having him.”
Fowler also indicates that J.J. McCarthy, the University of Michigan quarterback who Minnesota traded up to get last year, will eventually be The Guy for the Vikings — Whether that is in six months from now when preseason games are underway or a year from now after another year sitting behind Darnold is still to be determined.BLEACHER NATION ON FACEBOOK: Bears | Cubs | Bulls | Blackhawks
