The first series of Am I Being Unreasonable?, the comedy-thriller created by and starring Daisy May Cooper and Selin Hizli, was a Dostoyevskian triumph, packed with hidden agendas, panic-inducing flashbacks and looming guilt. As we crash back into series two, the question is: can the series sustain the tension now that we know its big secrets?
Cooper has said Am I Being Unreasonable? was named after a Mumsnet thread, where women post complaints about their partners, and others tell them even minor indiscretions are divorce-worthy offences. In the show, the characters’ indiscretions are rarely minor – affairs, spying, animal cruelty, relentless lying and maybe even murder.
When we first met Nic (Cooper), self-obsessed mum to Ollie (Lenny Rush), she was trapped in an unfulfilling marriage to Dan (Dustin Demri-Burns), but found solace in new friend and fellow outsider Jen (Hizli).

Turns out, she killed him. We learned the truth via Nic’s flashbacks, but going into series two, the other characters are still in the dark.
We pick up where we left series one – at Alex’s memorial, where the affair has just been aired. Cue fighting, and Nic running away from her problems, this time in a taxi that screeches from the scene while Alex’s widow Suzie (Amanda Wilkin) chases.
Motherland's monstrous Amanda is back - and she's as cringey as ever
Read MoreThe momentum now relies on Nic’s battle to conceal the truth about Alex’s death. We know there were witnesses to the crime, and the threat of their reappearance lingers. To heighten the intrigue, doubts are cast on Jen’s motives, and we see her spying, gaslighting, and having flashbacks of her own that reveal troubled relationships with former best friends.
We also learn more about Suzie – the truth about her relationship with Alex and how much she knew about the affair with Nic. These strands allow writers Cooper and Hizli to create some effective cliffhangers, playing with our sympathies as characters flip from victim to perpetrator with every new revelation.
The comedy is still there, too. There are laugh-out-loud lines and surreal moments – including an over-the-top school play in which Nic is forced to play a witch – helps to build a meaty fictional universe.
Lenny Rush as Ollie (Photo: BBC/Boffola Pictures/Lara Cornell)There’s a cast of new characters: a crow-obsessed taxi driver, a property inspector with a schoolyard grudge against Nic, and Jurgen, a Dutch (or is he?) tarot card reader, IT expert, and a bit of a pervert. Not all of these are entirely believable and as the whole village spills over with unhinged personalities, the excesses of Nic and Jen start to feel like no big deal.
Still, you want to know more about the toxic relationship between the two friends. Nic craves constant admiration but doesn’t care where it comes from, whereas Jen needs to be needed, always looking to rescue women from nefarious men.
The core cast give brilliant performances. Cooper captures the oscillating ego of Nic, Hizli masters Jen’s blend of desperation and manipulation, and Demri-Burns is brilliant as the caddish Dan. Meanwhile, Rush shows why he was awarded a Bafta for series one at just 14 years old, putting in another nuanced performance as Ollie, whose cunning moves cause growing concern for his parents.
But it soon becomes too apparent that a third series has already been commissioned. Storylines that should naturally conclude are drawn out, leaving me with questions.
While it doesn’t reach the heights of the first series, the return of Am I Being Unreasonable? is just tantalising enough to ensure I’ll be tuning in for the third instalment.
‘Am I Being Unreasonable?’ continues next Wednesday at 9.30pm
