Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand become highest-ranked Indian doubles duo in BWF history

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have created history. The top-ranked Indian women’s duo in doubles badminton has reached a career-high rank of 9 in the BWF (Badminton World Federation) Rankings. In doing so, they have surpassed the previous record by Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta, who had reached No. 10 all the way back in 2015.

Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand reach historic No. 9

In the latest BWF ranking, Treesa-Gayatri moved up to No. 9. This is despite their Round of 16 exit at the Malaysia Open. Having beaten Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai in the first round, they fell to China’s Zhang Shuxian and Jia Yifan in three tight games. But this was enough to get them that historic high ranking.

Up next for them is the India Open 2025. They’ll face Japan’s Ayako Sakuramoto and Arisa Higashino in the opening round later today (January 14) with the hope of winning not just this match but the whole tournament. The ranking will be a good motivator and consolation for Treesa-Gayatri as they failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics last year.
