On June 2, the Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed June as Reunification Month, recognizing and celebrating families who have successfully reunified with their children, as well as families currently working through the process and the many support staff who assist these families.
Department of Human Services Deputy Director Tami Grant noted that there are several elements to achieve the primary goal of reunifying children and families. These elements include promoting authentic family engagement, integrating the voices of children, youth, and families into case planning and court processes, enhancing parent experiences when partnering with child welfare and developing and strengthening natural support networks.
“As a result of the dedication of our team and partners alike, 56% of closed child welfare cases have resulted in reunification so far this year,” Grant said during the board meeting.
In 2024, within 90 days of first contact, the Department of Human Services was able to either close or move to a permanency team a total of 96% of child welfare investigations in Weld County. Additionally, 64% of closed cases resulted in families achieving reunification after addressing areas of concern.
“Through hard work and the commitment to overcoming difficult life circumstances, families are able to reunify,” Commissioner Coordinator for the Department of Human Services Lynette Peppler said in a release. “This month is an opportunity to celebrate these individuals and to inspire other parents who may be currently navigating this process.”
To further celebrate the efforts of Weld County families, the Department of Human Services staff and community members, a superhero-themed celebration will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, at the LINC Library in Greeley, at 501 8th Ave.
