Lewis Capaldi faced an unexpected challenge at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival this weekend when he lost his voice during an emotional performance.
The musician, known for his soulful delivery, pressed on despite the setback as fans cheered and helped him finish the last song in his stirring one-hour set. Repeatedly apologizing to the audience, the Scottish singer thanked them for their support.
"I really apologize. You've all come out and my voice is really packing in," he said. "We're gonna play two more songs if that's cool, even if I can't hit all the notes."
Capaldi, 26, began the afternoon in good spirits, pranking festivalgoers by erroneously announcing that Ed Sheeran would be joining him on stage. As the set wore on, however, he experienced vocal troubles, and was seen visibly struggling with tics. Last September, Capaldi revealed he had been diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome.
While he continued with the set, and was enthusiastically supported by the crowd, he struggled to make it through the final songs, and ultimately ended up cutting his set short.
“I wanted to come back and do Glasto ’cause it’s so incredible, so I just wanna thank you for watching us. I was shit scared but you’ve really made me feel at ease. I’m really sorry. I hope the Eavises will have me back on, even though it’s been a bit of a shit show,” he added.
Capaldi — who won a Brit Award for “Someone You Loved” in February 2020 — announced in September 2022 that he had been diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome.
“I’ve always had it apparently,” the “Wish You the Best” crooner explained during an Instagram Live session. “So, I do the shoulder twitch quite a lot and you see underneath every TikTok people are like, ‘Why is he twitching?’ Which is fine. Curiosity is fine. I get it.”
"The last few months have been full-on both mentally and physically," he wrote. "I haven't been home properly since Christmas, and at the moment I am struggling to get to grips with it all. I need to take a moment to rest and recover, to be at my best and ready for Glastonbury, and all of the other incredible shows coming up so that I'm able to continue doing what I love for a long time to come."
