For the Galaxy, it wasn’t a loss. Nor was it a win, though no doubt they feel like it should have been.
Looking for a consecutive victory after starting the MLS season winless in their first 16 games, the defending MLS Cup champions ceded a tying goal in injury time for a 3-3 draw against host St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday.
The Galaxy finally got in the win column two weeks ago against Real Salt Lake and were on the cusp of another, answering each St. Louis CITY SC goal with one of their own before Gabriel Pec punctuated it in the 87th minute for the lead.
Joao Klauss, however, played spoiler as he had all day, cinching a hat trick off a set piece that saw Timo Baumgarti head a long pass from outside the top of the box back to the right. The ball got behind the Galaxy defense and Klauss cranked it off a bounce from a difficult angle into the upper-left corner in the fifth minute of injury time.
The Galaxy (1-12-5, 8 points) came into the match trailing St. Louis 0-2-3 in their brief series.
Klauss opened the scoring in the 35th minute, only for Pec to respond six minutes later with his first goal of the game, driving his left-footed shot into the lower-left corner from the center of the box off an entry pass from Marco Reus.
Early in the second half, St. Louis took a 2-1 lead on another Klauss strike. Four minutes later, Matheus Nascimento, who recorded his first career assist in his second consecutive start in the May 31 victory, delivered the equalizer with his Galaxy goal off a slick back-heel flick from Reus.
Pec came through again, taking advantage of a fallen defender to dribble into the box and get past charging St. Louis goalie Roman Burki. His shot from the center of the box into a wide-open net appeared to be a sure three points for the Galaxy, only for Klauss to put an end to any hopes a few minutes later.
Novak Micovic made three saves for the Galaxy, who get some time off before heading to the Centennial State for a showdown with the Colorado Rapids on June 25.
