Zach Root chased in 2nd inning of CWS start vs. LSU

Zach Root did not make it through 2 innings in a wild development for Arkansas to begin its College World Series journey.

Facing LSU, the star lefty was able to get through the 1st inning without any troubles at all. Things in the 2nd inning took a much different trajectory.

After a strikeout of Steven Milam, Root ran into immediate trouble with back-to-back walks with 1 out. A bunt single by Dickinson loaded the bases, and it was quickly 1-0 LSU after an RBI hit by Stanfield.

Root’s troubles did not stop there. He would hit the next batter with a pitch, driving in another run, before a fielder’s choice made it 3-0 with 2 outs in the top of the 2nd inning.

At that point, Dave Van Horn had seen enough. He pulled Root after just 1.2 innings pitched after the southpaw had walked 2 batters and hit another in a shaky start in Omaha.

The outing ties the shortest start of Root’s career. It’s also Root’s first start of the season that he has failed to complete at least 3 innings pitched. In 2 NCAA Tournament starts, Root covered 13 innings pitched with just 1 earned run and 3 walks.

Arkansas was able to get out of the 2nd inning without further damage, but the Razorbacks find themselves in a 3-0 hole in a crucial opening game at the CWS. The Razorbacks and Tigers were the heavy favorites in the College World Series odds entering Omaha, and the winner of Saturday night’s game will be off to a much-needed victory to open their journey.
