PINEVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- One person is in custody for a fight that escalated during an illegal street takeover, according to the Pineville Police Department.
Around 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to the 10703 block of Park Road in Pineville for multiple reports of a large crowd, vehicles obstructing traffic, and possible shots fired. When they arrived, they saw evidence of a large gathering and learned that a physical altercation had started between several people.
Police said someone got a firearm and shot multiple rounds during the fight. At least one bullet was shot into a car, which hit a victim in the leg. That person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where they are in stable condition.
Markus Horton said he was at the slide show with his girlfriend. She was the person who got shot.
“I like seeing nice cars and I just happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time," Horton said. “A guy hit a girl and then people started jumping on the guy and then shots came from the left side and from the right side.”
The fight and shooting were after an illegal street takeover in a parking lot that involved multiple vehicles driving recklessly, and doing burnouts and donuts, police said.
One person was taken into custody in connection with the physical fight. The suspect involved in the shooting has not yet been identified.
“My girl doesn’t leave the car in these events," Horton said. "She just likes to watch from the sidelines, and she just got caught in the crossfire.”
Horton said a lot of the tracks where these events happen have been shut down. He said the groups don't have a safe spot where they can watch anymore.
"I wish the city would keep it open where people can actually have fun and do it in a controlled environment, but the way everything’s getting shut down nowadays, people have no choice but to do it on the slide shows where it’s not safe and there’s not the proper precautions," Horton said. “If you’re thinking about it, make sure to go to a legal pit in a controlled environment where there’s no guns or anything and everyone has the proper precautions.”
Horton's girlfriend is expected to be okay. He said she won't be able to walk for at least 16 weeks.
This is an active investigation. Anyone with information or footage of the street takeover or shooting is asked to contact a detective at 704-889-2231 or Crime Stoppers at 704-889-TIPS.
