‘70s Power-Pop Legends Forced to Cancel Dates ‘Due to Illness’

The Rubinoos, the Berkley, Calif.-based power-pop band that had a few hits in the 1970s but continues to have a cult following, has been forced to cancel some of their tour dates due to an unspecified illness.

The band took to their official Instagram account on June 4 to announce the news.

“We’re very sorry to announce that we are canceling our performance tonight at The Chapel in S.F. due to illness. We are also canceling our shows in Portland and Seattle later this week. We are so bummed!” the post reads.

The band was set to open for the all-star indie rock combo the Minus 5, led by former R.E.M. sideman Scott McCaughey and featuring former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on bass, Kurt Bloch on guitar, Linda Pitmon on drums and new recruit Debbi Peterson of the Bangles on backing vocals, keyboards and guitar.

The Minus 5 also expressed their disappointment over the cancellation on their Instagram account.

“So sad our pals @TheRubinoos will not be able to perform with us @mississippistudios and @tractortavern this weekend. Get well, friends! they posted.

The Rubinoos had minor hits in the late ‘70s with their cover of Tommy James & the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now” (later an even bigger hit for singer Tiffany), and the original “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.” Years later, alleged similarities between the latter song and Avril Lavigne’s 2007 song “Girlfriend” prompted a copyright infringement lawsuit that was later settled. The band also recorded the theme song for the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds.
