Jofra Archer was a notable absentee from the England Test squad, announced on Thursday (June 5). The hosts named a 14-player squad for the first Test of the upcoming five-match series against India.
While Jofra Archer was not named in the squad, he is in contention for the second Test. The right-arm pacer, who has suffered a number of serious injuries in the last couple of years or so, has not played a Test for England since 2021. The last of his 13 Tests was the Ahmedabad Test against India.
And he could make his much-awaited return to the Test arena when India and England play the second Test next month. Jofra Archer was due to play in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies but missed out due to a finger injury that he sustained while playing in the IPL last month.

The same injury also made him unavailable for the England Lions' ongoing series against India A. The series against India A would have marked his return to red-ball cricket.
Jofra Archer set to return to red-ball cricket:
After missing the ODI series against West Indies and the two games against India A, Jofra Archer is all set to return to red-ball cricket later this month. England Men's selector Luke Wright has revealed that the pacer would make his return in the format for Sussex this month in their second XI fixtures.
He is likely to feature in the match against Durham. If Jofra Archer performs well in the match and remains injury-free, he is likely to be recalled to the England squad for the second Test against India.
"Jof's also trucking along really well actually," said Wright. "The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So he'll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test.
"Like anything with all these bowlers, he's got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test," he added.
Archer's Test career has been pretty much off track for the last four years due to a spate of injuries. In 2021, he suffered an elbow injury and remained on the sidelines for the remainder of the year. In 2022, he also suffered a lower-back stress fracture and missed the T20 World Cup. He returned to action in early 2023 but suffered another injury.
