The best FCS college football teams aren’t taking names or asking questions later, they’re grabbing a win with brute force and moving on to the next one. Not surprisingly, the longest FCS winning streaks are owned by a relative Who’s Who of championship programs.
Dynasties have been a big part of FCS college football ever since its early stages in the late 1970s, but the longest winning streaks have been a part of more recent history.
The four longest have occurred since 2012, with North Dakota State leading the way in the top two spots. Eight FCS national titles are represented among the four streaks that also involve South Dakota State and James Madison.
Entering the 2025 season, Jackson State has the FCS’ longest active winning streak at 10 games, followed by Tennessee Tech at five.
Following are the FCS winning streaks of 20 or more wins:
Longest FCS Winning Streaks
1. North Dakota State (2017-20) – 39 Games
Start: South Dakota 49-14 (2017); End: at Southern Illinois 38-14 (March 27, 2021)
NDSU captured the first 21 wins and two national titles under coach Chris Klieman and with Easton Stick at quarterback, then another 18 wins and one national title under coach Matt Entz. The Bison outscored opponents 1,503-481 for an average winning margin of 26.2 points. The streak included victories over 23 different programs, with a high of four against Illinois State as well as two over a Southern Illinois program that ended the run in the 2020 season that was mostly held the following spring due to the pandemic.

Start: at South Dakota in Sioux Falls 54-0 (2012); End: at Northern Iowa 23-3 (2014)
The streak began under coach Craig Bohl and included the final two of his three national titles with the Bison. In Klieman’s debut in 2014, quarterback Carson Wentz made his first career start and John Crockett rushed for three touchdowns as the Bison won at Iowa State for what then became an FCS-record 25-game winning streak.
3. South Dakota State (2022-23) – 29 Games
Start: UC Davis 24-22 (2022); End: at Oklahoma State 44-20 (2024)
One week after losing a 7-3 defensive slugfest at Iowa, SDSU denied UC Davis of a late two-point attempt to begin a streak that included wins in back-to-back national championship games – the first under John Stiegelmeier and the second under Jimmy Rogers. Quarterback Mark Gronowski directed an offense full of NFL talent and the 2023 defense allowed the fewest points per game (9.3) in the FCS in 20 years. The Jackrabbits fell in their 2024 opener, but still ended the season ranked No. 1 among FCS teams in wins during the decade.
4. James Madison (2016-17) – 26 Games
Start: at Maine 31-20 (2016); End: North Dakota State 17-13 (2017 FCS Championship Game)
Under first-year coach Mike Houston, the Dukes ended NDSU’s five-year run as FCS champion in a 2016 national semifinal and went on to capture the title game over Youngstown State. Bryan Schor was the starting quarterback in each win while the Dukes averaged a tick under 40 points per game before the streak ended back in Frisco, Texas.
T5. Montana (2001-02) – 24 Games
Start: Western Washington (2001); End: at Eastern Washington 30-21
Montana won the 2001 national title under coach Joe Glenn and the ’02 squad went on to extend two Big Sky win streaks to record levels – 25 overall in a row and 13 consecutively on the road. Over the two seasons, the Grizzlies had a four-game span in which they allowed only 13 points. John Edwards was the starting quarterback for most of the wins during the streak.
T5. Penn (1992-95) – 24 Games
Start: Harvard (1992); End: at Columbia 24-14 (1995)
The winning streak began late in the first of Al Bagnoli’s 23 seasons coaching Penn and led to perfect records the next two seasons before its end in 1995. The run was in jeopardy of being over at only four games early in the ’93 season when the Quakers overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to slip past Fordham. Future major league player Mark DeRosa, now manager of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, was Penn’s 1994-95 quarterback.
T7. Harvard (2013-15) – 22 Games
Start: Dartmouth 24-21 (2013); End: Penn 35-25 (2015)
T7. Sam Houston (2019-21) – 22 Games
Start: Houston Baptist (2019); End: Montana State 42-19 (2021)
