The Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, visited Daraa governorate today, Friday, June 6, which coincides with the first day of Eid al-Adha.
A reporter from Enab Baladi in Daraa reported that al-Sharaa met with the governor and several officials at the Daraa governorate building.
It was expected that he would perform Friday prayers at the Omari Mosque in Daraa al-Balad; however, his visit to the Omari Mosque was postponed due to the withdrawal of military forces from around the mosque.
After his meeting with the governor, al-Sharaa proceeded to the Omari Mosque to perform the Asr prayer, staying for a few minutes before his convoy left the governorate, amidst expectations that he would deliver a speech in the mosque square.
The area around the Omari Mosque witnessed heavy congestion in both its internal and external squares, in addition to the surrounding area, amid a strong presence of military personnel.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that the governorate experienced the closure of several roads by general security forces and the military, with dozens of checkpoints set up that restricted residents’ movement to specific routes, accompanied by thorough inspections of vehicles and individuals.
The Damascus-Daraa road was also closed until the conclusion of the visit.

The Omari Mosque in Daraa represents a symbol of the Syrian revolution, as its square witnessed the first protests against the Assad regime on March 18, 2011, and the mosque itself was subjected to bombardment by the Assad regime.
At the end of last May, the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, visited Aleppo governorate and delivered a speech at the “Aleppo Key to Victory” event, which aims to honor the families of the dead and injured during the liberation of the city in the “Deterrence of Aggression” battle.
During his visit to Aleppo, al-Sharaa announced the end of the war against tyranny and the beginning of the battle against poverty.
The Syrian president called on Syrians to start working diligently to rebuild the country and advance society, especially after the lifting of sanctions that were burdensome to citizens and the economy.
He emphasized that Syria now has a golden opportunity for stability, urging all citizens to unite in the battle to build the nation.
He concluded his speech by saying, “Let our slogan be, as we raised it before, we neither rest nor allow ourselves to be at rest until we rebuild Syria anew and take pride in it in front of the whole world, by the grace and power of God.”
