The death of Dolly Parton's husband Carl Thomas Dean in March may have seemed unexpected to fans, but as the country legend revealed this week, it wasn't a surprise to her.
In a new interview with The Independent that was published on Wednesday, May 28, Parton said that Dean had been "ill for quite a while" before he died at the age of 82.
"I really feel his presence. I just try to go on, because I know I have to," she said.

Parton continued, "And he was ill for quite a while, and part of me was at peace that he was at peace and not suffering anymore. But that still doesn’t make up for the loss and the loneliness of it."
She went on to say that, because of her faith, she believes she'll "see him again someday."
"I see him every day in my memories and in my heart, and in all the things that we used to do and all the things that we’ve built together," she said. "You just kind of have to learn to kind of make new plans — but that’s the hardest part."

Now that Parton, 79, is beginning this chapter of her life without him, her goal is to "keep him ever-present in everything that I do."
With a love like theirs that spanned six decades, there is no doubt that Parton will keep Dean's memory alive.
