I played for Liverpool and Man United but scary European transfer was best move I ever made

Paul Ince enjoyed a ‘perfect’ spell with Inter Milan despite the move not being his choice.

The former midfielder joined the Italian giants from Manchester United in 1995.

Ince had won nine trophies with the Red Devils, including two league titles, before departing Old Trafford.

Following six years at United, he became a fan favourite at the San Siro.

During his time in Milan, Ince made 73 appearances for Inter and scored 13 goals from midfield.

He was also part of the side which reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1997.

However, Inter missed out on European glory after losing their two-legged clash with Schalke on penalties.

Despite the crushing defeat in his penultimate appearance for the club, Ince still has fond memories of his time in Italy.

The 57-year-old even hailed the decision to move to Serie A as the best of his career.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Ince explained: “It wasn’t my choice to go in the first place. But obviously, once I decided, once I sat down with Inter, I had to come back and it was always scary.

“I think it’s different now because you see a lot of younger players go to Italy and Germany because it’s easy to do that now because everyone speaks English.

“In the 90s, when I went to Italy, they all spoke Italian. So you had to learn the language.

“I’m thinking I’m some thick school kid from Dagenham who never went to school. I’ve got to go to Italy now and start speaking Italian.

“So there’s always that worry, the wife and Thomas, when he was only two.

“But once I got there, it was the best, out of all the clubs, it was the best move I ever made. Really was.

“I mean, the style of football, just the passion of the fans. Everything about it, the weather, the food, everything about it was just perfect.”

Ince left Inter to join Liverpool in 1997 after two seasons with the club before spells at Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swindon and Macclesfield.

Meanwhile, his former side could add more European silverware to their trophy cabinet this weekend.

Simon Inzaghi’s side face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Victory for the Serie A runners-up would secure their fourth triumph in the competition and a seventh European trophy overall.
