While job creation across the region in April ran 44% above the norm, not every Southern California industry was in a hiring mood.
My trusty spreadsheet, filled with newly released state job figures, found 7.99 million at work in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties in April – up 27,500 in a month. That was a relative hiring spree considering a typical April had a median of 19,100 positions added since 2010.
So, which industries were boosting staffs?
Of the 15 major Southern California employment niches, 12 added jobs for the month, bucking a trend of slow hiring. You see, only five local industries expanded their workforce during the past 12 months,
Consider the job changes in key local business sectors, ranked by the one-month change. Let’s start with who was growing their staff …
Construction: 357,800 workers – up 6,300 in April vs. a median 3,200 historic hires for the month during the past 15 years. Jobs dipped by 14,700 in a year.
Healthcare: record 860,700 workers – up 4,100 in April vs. 1,500 historic hires. Jobs grew by 38,000 in a year.
Hotels/entertainment/recreation: 273,600 workers – up 3,800 in April vs. 3,200 historic hires. Jobs grew by 1,900 in a year.
Full-service eateries/food service: 330,500 workers – up 3,800 in April vs. 3,600 historic hires. Jobs fell by 5,400 in a year.
Fast-food restaurants: 341,900 workers – up 3,500 in April vs. 3,600 historic hires. Jobs declined by 11,200 in a year.
Social assistance: record 536,100 workers – up 2,600 in April vs. 1,800 historic hires. Jobs grew by 32,300 in a year.
Government: record 1,056,000 workers – up 2,300 in April vs. 1,800 historic hires. Jobs grew by 23,600 in a year.
Information: 222,100 workers – up 2,200 in April vs. 4,100 historic cuts. Jobs dropped by 2,600 in a year.
Personal services: 263,100 workers – up 1,400 in April vs. 2,400 historic hires. Jobs slipped 3,900 in a year.
Professional-business services: 1,121,400 workers – up 1,200 in April vs. 6,800 historic hires. Jobs were down 7,000 in a year.
Financial: 346,400 workers – up 800 in April vs. 1,000 historic hires. Jobs decreased by 10,000 in a year.
Private education: record 225,100 workers – up 500 in April vs. 800 historic hires. Jobs grew by 4,600 in a year.
And here are the local industries that are trimming staffing …
Retailing: 715,200 workers – down 2,500 in April vs. 1,000 historic hires. Job cuts totalled 4,400 in a year.
Logistics-utilities: 789,800 workers – down 1,500 in April vs. 1,300 historic hires. Jobs were 3,800 below the year-ago level.
Manufacturing: 542,300 workers – down 1,000 in April vs. 800 historic cuts. Jobs tumbled 22,200 in a year.
