Tommy Tuberville has represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate since 2021. Now, the former head coach is apparently set to be a candidate for governor of Alabama, according to the Associated Press.
Tuberville, a Republican, would be one of the biggest names of a gubernatorial race that will be decided in November 2026. He was a political novice when he declared his candidacy for U.S. Senate in 2019. In 2020, he ultimately defeated then-incumbent Doug Jones.
In November, Tuberville announced that he would seek a second term in the Senate in 2026. But with Kay Ivey set to leave office as governor — Alabama state law prohibits individuals from serving for more than 2 full terms as governor — Tuberville will reportedly throw his hat in the ring for the job.
Tuberville’s head coaching career began at Ole Miss, where he went 25-20 from 1995 to 1998. He acheived much of his success at Auburn, where he led the Tigers to a 13-0 record, a Sugar Bowl win, and a No. 2 postseason ranking in 2004. He resigned after the 2008 season.
In 2010, Tuberville was hired as head coach at Texas Tech, leading the program to a 20-17 mark in 3 seasons. He then left for the same job at Cincinnati, going 29-22 in 4 seasons before resigning.
