Israeli embassy: Slain staffers were in the prime of their lives

The Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C. said that two of its staffers fatally shot late Wednesday outside an event in Washington, D.C. were in the “prime of their lives,” adding that colleagues are heartbroken and devastated.

“Yaron and Sarah were our friends and colleagues. They were in the prime of their lives,” the embassy said in a statement on X, referring to Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26.

“This evening, a terrorist shot and killed them as they exited an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in DC. The entire embassy staff is heartbroken and devastated by their murder. No words can express the depth of our grief and horror at this devastating loss.”

Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, said that Lischinsky was planning to propose to Milgrim in Jerusalem next week.

“They were a beautiful couple who came to enjoy an evening in Washington's cultural center,” Leiter said at a news conference.

Lischinsky and Milgrim were shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum following a young diplomats event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC).  Metropolitan police said a man arrested after the incident chanted “Free, free Palestine” while in custody.

Lischinsky, who had German citizenship, was a research assistant in the political department at the embassy, and Milgrim, an American from Overland Park, Kansas, also worked at the embassy and organized trips to Israel.

AJC CEO and former Democratic congressman Ted Deutch described Lischinsky and Milgrim as cherished members of the AJC community.

“They were stolen from us. They had their entire lives ahead of them,” he wrote in a post on X.

He described Milgrim as “warm and compassionate, committed to peacebuilding, and passionate about sustainability and people-to-people relations.”

“Yaron always had a smile on his face and a welcoming presence. He had reportedly bought a ring and was planning to ask Sarah to marry him in Jerusalem next week,” Deutch wrote.

AJC is a global Jewish advocacy organization that works to build ties between the Jewish people and Israel, communities around the world, with special outreach with Muslim communities and Arab countries.

The German Embassy in Washington called the murder of the two staffers an “antisemitic act of terror” that must be “condemned with the utmost clarity.”

“Germany stands with Israel and the Jewish community,” the embassy posted on X.
