Actor Jensen Ackles thinks fans of his beloved Supernatural character, Dean Winchester, have a reason to be happy about his new Prime Video series, Countdown.
During a May 21 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ackles said his Countdown character, Mark Meachum, has a similar personality to Dean, known for his bravery, quips, and love of pie.
"There's probably going to be some familiarity from that fandom with this guy," said Ackles while speaking to the publication. "It's not like I'm going so opposite spectrum with this character. He's going to be a familiar taste, which is good. I like doing that. I mean, I played Dean for 15 years. I loved playing that kind of a character. And I think this guy is in the vein of that, just with a completely different set of circumstances."
Ackles also describes his new risk-taking character as a "rogue L.A. detective, wrong-side-of-the-tracks kind of guy." He also shared fans can expect to see him do plenty of stunts in Countdown, which premieres on June 25.
"I actually just did some ADR the other day for an action sequence. I was watching it and I was like, 'Oh, I'm getting my Tom Cruise on here. This is some full-on action stuff,'" said Ackles during the Entertainment Weekly interview.
Ackles played Dean throughout Supernatural's 15 seasons. In the series finale, which premiered in November 2020, Dean dies (for the final time) while fighting a vampire, leaving his brother and hunting partner, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) behind. Sam lives a long life until he reunites with his brother in heaven.
During a January 2022 interview on the Inside of You podcast, Ackles said he was not initially happy about Dean's death before filming for Season 15 started. He said he believed it would have made more sense for Sam to die first "as a martyr" or the characters to die together "like a Butch and Sundance kind of thing."
He said, however, with some encouragement from his wife, Danneel Ackles, he reached out to the show's creator, Eric Kripke, who left after Season 5, to get his opinion on the matter. According to Ackles, Kripke sent him an email "explaining why he felt this was a great ending."
"It just put things into perspective for me. And then from then on, I was on board," said Ackles on the podcast.
