IREDELL COUNTY, N.C (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Interstate 77 will be closed for several hours after a fatal crash involving an overturned semi-truck, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Friday, May 16, the North Carolina Department of Transportation says. All northbound lanes of I-77 are closed near Exit 42 for US-21.
This is less than 3 miles from downtown Troutman. NCDOT says a tractor-trailer overturned, and NCSHP later confirmed that someone died in the crash.
Troopers say there are significant backups in the area. Traffic is being diverted off the interstate.
Officials currently estimate that the road will reopen around 11 a.m., as it will take several hours to clear the incident.
