Uber CEO signals changes to ride sharing and delivery services – and it means more discounts for riders

The Uber CEO has revealed the company is rapidly expanding into new parts of the US, offering increased food delivery services and ridesharing into “less dense” parts of the country.

In a fireside chat with JP Morgan, Dara Khosrowshahi said the company was focused growing the company in less populated areas with limited on-demand transport services.

With about 45% of the country living in areas with minimal rideshare coverage, the executive said the initiative is part of a wider plan to boost the company’s profitability.

“We are increasing our penetration in less dense markets,” he said.

“This is a really important initiative for the company that started with food, goin to the suburbs, going to secondary, tertiary markets and actually now is extended into mobility now.

“The growth rate in these less dense markets is significant higher than the growth rate in the core and we think the potential in these less dense markets is very significant.”

He also added that Uber was offering higher numbers of discounts to riders as a way to boost retention and loyalty.

“Were giving our members a discount and trading that for a much higher frequency and better retention membership,” he said.

In good news for riders, Khosrowshahi also added Uber was now scoring drivers based on their driving ability as a way to make trips safer.

The company is now rewarding drivers for safe driving, he said, tying skill to earnings.

“Another product improvement that we’re quite excited about is safer drivers, we’re now scoring drivers based on their driving behavior,” he said.

“These are kind of third party safety scores, and what we see is that as we score drivers, they start driving better.

“And you know it’s very, very specific as to the amount of harsh breaking, the amount of harsh turns, speed ups, slow down…and we are now attaching the safety score and generally driver quality to driver earnings.”
