SDFC takes control to outpace Rapids 2-0, extend MLS winning streak

San Diego FC’s winning streak continues.

The MLS expansion franchise defeated the Colorado Rapids at home by a score of 2-0 Wednesday, and in the process stretched its streak to three games, while moving up the standings too.

Despite the match being a rare mid-week contest, attendance and enthusiasm appeared to be at the same level as the typical weekend games. And that enthusiasm reached a fever pitch during the game’s 58th minute, when SDFC winger Anders Dreyer scored with a left-footed shot from the center of goal to the net’s upper right central zone.

“Most important for me as a footballer is playing on a successful team,” Dreyer said during the post-match press conference. “If it’s me or someone else scoring, I’m happy.

“I think the way we’re building this team, we’re happy if anyone scores,” he added. “I’m just focused on winning games.”

SDFC controlled the ball for just over 58% of the time, and San Diego took a total of 28 shots, compared to nine for Colorado. The Rapids had five shots on goal compared to nine for San Diego, which led 1-0 at halftime.

That was thanks to a goal in the 32nd minute by defender Chris McVey. The Swedish national connected with a header from the center of the goal to the upper left of the net. His Danish teammate, Jeppe Tverskov, was credited with the assist.

It was the fifth match this season in which San Diego prevented its opponent from scoring a goal and the second time in its past three matches.

“That’s what we always go for, every week,” McVey said about holding opponents scoreless. “We just keep going.

“This is a pretty complete game,” he added, echoing comments that head coach Mikey Varas made earlier in the news conference. “We controlled defensively, and we created a lot of (scoring) chances.”

With the win against the Rapids, SDFC now holds a record of 7-4-2, with 23 points, good enough for second place in the MLS Western Conference standings.

The game was payback of sorts for San Diego: the Rapids had edged SDFC 3-2 in the teams’ previous meeting on April 12. Since then, however, Colorado has managed just one win in five matches. With the Rapids’ third straight defeat, the club’s record fell to 4-5-4.

Wednesday night’s game was the 13th MLS regular season contest of San Diego FC’s inaugural campaign and the first-ever midweek match for the expansion side.

San Diego is in the middle of a stretch of three matches in eight days, including its 2-1 road victory last weekend against St. Louis City SC.

The side’s next two matches are also at Snapdragon Stadium: at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Sporting Kansas City and May 24 versus the winless LA Galaxy.

The match against the Galaxy will be nationally televised.

Notes: Among those in attendance at the game were reality TV stars Hannah Godwin and Dylan Barbour. The couple, who met in 2019 on season 6 of the ABC show “Bachelor in Paradise,” married in 2023. Also in attendance were members of the Mexican norteño band Los Tucanes de Tijuana and the actor Brian Baumgartner, best known for his role as Kevin Malone on the NBC sitcom “The Office.”
