The Chatsworth, Granada Hills Charter and El Camino Real boys volleyball teams have made it to the CIF LA City Section Open Division semifinals that will be played Tuesday night.
The matchups: No. 3 seed El Camino Real at No. 2 Chatsworth; No. 4 Granada Hills at No. 1 Venice. Both semifinal matches start at 7 p.m.
A win would put Chatsworth in its fifth straight Open Division championship match. El Camino Real is gunning for a historic upset and its first win over Chatsworth in seven years.
The Chancellors offense fired away all night in its first-round win, 3-1, over University last week. Junior Grant Chang led the team with 25 kills and three blocks while Noa Beauregard added 17 kills. Setter Patrick McCarty totaled 51 assists.
El Camino Real’s pass and block will need to be clicking to slow down the Chatsworth attack.
Granada Hills swept Palisades, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16, last week behind strong ball control.
“Palisades is always a tough match,” Highlanders coach Tom Harp said in a phone interview. “They’ve been the standard-bearer for the City Section for a long time. So that was a good win for us…I think our ball control looked the best it’s looked all year, so that was key.”
Granada’s balanced attack was led by setter Diego Meda with 30 assists and Romar Acdan with 10 kills.
The Highlanders will now aim to upset the top-seeded Gondoliers.
Top-seeded Taft beats Cleveland in Division I
Taft came out of its bye round hot and took care of Cleveland in the Division 1 quarterfinals last week.
The Toreadors beat the Cavaliers in four sets, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, and and advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2016.
Taft, the No. 1 seed, will host No. 5 Marquez on Tuesday for a spot in the CIF title match. Marshall is facing Carson in the other Division I semifinal.
Marshall made the semifinals by sweeping Kennedy while Carson survived a wild five-set match against Van Nuys that included two deuce sets including a match-sealing 19-17 finish in the fifth game.
Heartbreakers in CIF-SS quarterfinals, semis
St. Francis’ explosive postseason run ended Saturday with a loss to top-seeded Mater Dei, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17. It was the Golden Knights’ first straight-set loss in a best-of-five match this season.
Westlake and Notre Dame also had their playoff runs end last week in the Division 4 quarterfinals.
After wins over St. Anthony and Crescenta Valley to begin the playoffs, the Warriors were dropped by Corona Santiago in five sets.
Notre Dame bested Malibu and Western in the opening rounds before a straight-set loss at Santa Barbara, which swept Santiago in the semifinals.
Second-seeded Royal was also on the wrong end of a five-set battle, losing to Sage Hill in the quarterfinals, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 15-25, 15-10. It was the Royals’ first best-of-five defeat in nearly two months.
Village Christian came close to a championship match appearance in Division 6 but was stopped by Quartz Hill in the semifinals. The Royals took down the Crusaders in five sets.
Newbury Park goes down in five
Newbury Park made a remarkable turnaround this season, but came up one point short of making it to the CIF-SS Division 5 championship game.
Newbury Park lost to Esperanza in five sets in the semifinals Saturday night. The Panthers were serving to win the match in the fifth set, but the Aztecs went on a 5-0 run to pull out the victory, 25-12, 25-17, 19-25, 21-25, 16-14.
Newbury Park started the season 0-11 while its starting setter, Ryker Daniels, missed time due to injuries sustained in a car accident. The Panthers worked their way back up and finished just shy of winning the Marmonte League title.
Daniels broke multiple bones in a traffic collision in December but still was at practice on crutches for all of the first part of the season. Daniels was one of numerous injured Panthers this season.
“You’d get in the locker room after a match and whether we lost a close game or we got wiped out, it’s hard to keep it up, but the guys, they stuck to it,” Panthers coach Jorge Ostrovsky said in a phone interview. “They worked hard every day. I think it’s a testament to those guys. A lot of teams could have just folded and called it a day, but they just kept showing up to practice and working hard every time.”
After taking down top-seeded Chino Hills to start the playoffs, the Panthers registered back-to-back sweeps of Paloma Valley and a familiar foe in Oak Park.
Daniels finished with 27 assists in the win over Oak Park with 10 kills coming from Caleb Eschenberg, who also added a trio blocks and aces. Luke Pace tallied 15 digs, five kills and a pair of blocks while Matthew Rosenthal added five kills and as many blocks. Rosenthal’s brother, Luke, added eight kills and three blocks.
“Ultimately, it’s the fact that these guys have trusted each other from beginning to end and have not given up is the biggest testament I can give to them,” Ostrovsky said. “These guys never give up. They always give you 100% effort. And these guys are friends. These guys have known each other since kindergarten, we’re a neighborhood team.”
