I’m ready for warm summer evenings, the sound of cicadas and a cold drink in my hand. I’ve already started daydreaming about sitting on my front porch, sipping cocktails and watching the fireflies come out. And, after a little scroll through my favorite social media accounts, I think I’ve found my first drink of the season: the Batanga cocktail, which I spotted on food creator Sara McCune's (@growingupsarita) feed. This simple, crisp and ridiculously refreshing Mexican cocktail is perfect for hot nights and good company. Plus, there’s a quirky little tradition that makes it even more fun to mix up. If you haven’t had a Batanga drink yet, here's what you need to know.Related:The Genius Way to Make a Frozen Margarita 10x Better?? The Batanga is like a Cuba Libre but with a Mexican twist, swapping in tequila for rum and leaning on the bold, slightly spicy flavors of Mexican Coke. If you’ve never had Mexican Coke, it’s a game-changer for cocktails and mixed drinks of all kinds. Unlike American Coke, it’s made with real cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, which gives it a cleaner, crisper taste with a hint of molasses that plays perfectly with tequila’s more earthy notes. The drink itself is delightfully straightforward. There are no fancy infusions or ten-step garnishes here. As McCune explains in her video, according to tradition, you’re supposed to stir it with the same knife you used to cut the lime. I can’t tell if this is a subtle flex or just a practical kitchen move, but either way, I’m here for it.

How to Make a Classic Batanga Cocktail
To make this cocktail, you need salt (for the rim, optional but recommended), a lime (juiced, plus a wedge for garnish if you’re feeling fancy), Mexican Coke and tequila (blanco is traditional, but use what you like).Run a lime wedge around the rim of a tall glass and dip the rim in salt if you like a little extra flavor with each sip. Fill the glass with ice. Add the tequila and the lime juice and top with Mexican Coke (leave a little room at the top for some enthusiastic stirring). Now for the fun part—stir it with the same knife you used to cut the lime. Trust the tradition. Garnish with a lime wedge or just take it straight to the porch.Related: How to Make Homemade Lemonade Taste 10x Better
Why This Drink Just Works
The magic of the Batanga is in its simplicity. It’s a no-fuss, big-flavor cocktail that can be whipped up faster than you can find a bottle opener. The combination of fizzy, slightly spicy Coke, bright, acidic lime and smooth, earthy tequila hits all the right notes for a refreshing, backyard sipper.
Stirring with the knife is just the kind of quirky, slightly dangerous move that makes bartending at home a little more thrilling.
If you really want to take it up a notch, try using a smoky mezcal if you’re feeling adventurous (but the classic recipe is hard to beat).
So, next time you find yourself on the porch, with a breeze in your hair and a sunset on the horizon, mix up a Batanga and raise a glass to long summer nights.
