North Charlotte Harris Teeter closed indefinitely after three-alarm fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A north Charlotte grocery store will be closed until further notice after a three-alarm fire broke out inside.

Investigators believe someone intentionally set it.

Firefighters got the call shortly before 9:30 Saturday night, alerting them to a fire at the Harris Teeter on Davis Lake Parkway.

The flames eventually prompted a three-alarm response, which took about 90 firefighters roughly an hour and a half to extinguish and caused $500,000 worth of damage.

"There were a bunch of trucks," said Shanavia Frazier, a shopper. "This is unnormal... A lot of water restoration so it looks like some things got messed up in there."

Frazier was one of several people who came to the store Sunday afternoon thinking she'd get her grocery shopping done for the week.

"I have to buy my dog food," she said. "I have to pay bills today. I usually do that all through Harris Teeter."

Instead, she was met with yellow caution tape surrounding the store and closed signs blocking the store's entrance.

"Where am I going to get my groceries because it's right across the street and where am I going to pay my bill now," she said.

Several people were working to clean up and inspect the building, which workers told Queen City News, had some pretty serious smoke damage. Our team spotted crews on the roof, as well as inside the store.

"This store probably is not going to be the same afterward and just the rebuild of this store," said Frazier. "It was a great store. There was a bar. There was everything. We love to come here."

A Harris Teeter spokesperson sent us the following statement:

We are grateful to our valued associates at The Shops at David Lake for their quick response in safely evacuating our associates and customers, and to the emergency responders who bravely worked to extinguish the fire. Our teams will continue to work with emergency responders, professional restoration companies and guidance from the Health Department to determine when we can re-open.
