Boardwalk Empire star Michael Pitt has been arrested on sexual abuse charges, according to TMZ. Law enforcement sources say that he is accused of sexually assaulting his then-girlfriend and later assaulting her with blunt objects.
When he was arrested on Friday, May 2, the formal charges included assault injury with a weapon sexually motivated, strangulation sexually motivated, sex abuse, and forcible compulsion.
The indictment says that Pitt's charges come from four separate domestic violence incidents that happened between April 2020 and August 2021. The police and prosecutors are alleging that Pitt attacked his then-girlfriend with both a wooden plank and later a cinderblock.
Pitt pled not guilty and posted the $100,000 bail in order to be released from police custody.
The 44-year-old actor is best known for playing Jimmy Darmody, protégé to corrupt political figure Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi), on Boardwalk Empire for two seasons. He was eventually written out of the show amid talk that he was difficult to work with.
In 2011, at the time that his tenure on the HBO drama was coming to an end, a rep from United Talent Agency told Deadline that the company had dropped him as a client because he was so hard to work with.
"If you decide to post about someone (probably WME) signing Michael Pitt, who is one of the stars of Boardwalk Empire, please note that UTA fired him as a client yesterday because he’s really difficult on set and otherwise," said the rep.
Pitt also had recurring roles on Hannibal and Dawson's Creek. When asked about the charges against Pitt, his lawyer Jason Goldman denied all accusations to TMZ.
"Unfortunately, we live in a world where somebody like Mr. Pitt — an accomplished professional who would never so much as contemplate these crimes — can be arrested on the uncorroborated word of an unhinged individual," said Goldman. "In reality, this baseless claim is suspiciously raised some four or five years after the alleged incident, at a time when the two parties were in a completely consensual and voluntary relationship. This case will be dismissed."
