Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has hinted at a potential debut for South African young sensation Dewald Brevis for them in their IPL 2025 game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, April 25, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Dewald Brevis, who is famously known for his explosive hitting, was a late addition to the Chennai Super Kings squad after going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. CSK brought the “Baby AB” in as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh last week.
However, Brevis didn’t get a chance in the CSK’s previous game against the Mumbai Indians. Now, Stephen Fleming has added spice to the anticipation as he confirmed that Brevis is very much in contention to make his debut in yellow against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday.

The 20-year-old batter has already played 10 IPL matches in his career, scoring 230 runs for Mumbai Indians, and he is known for his explosive style and big-hitting ability.
Well, Fleming admitted that Dewald Brevis is an exciting option but said that other players’ve been with the squad from the start of the season, so picking the perfect playing XI against a strong SRH won’t be easy.

Fleming said that the CSK team management will be weighing all possibilities carefully, especially looking at how much impact Brevis can have if he gets his moment under the lights, and then take the call as they are aiming to win the home game against the SRH at Chepauk.
Stephen Fleming said at the pre-match press conference, “He's one of the options that we'll look at. We've got other players as well who have been with us for the whole tournament. Brevis is a good addition to the squad, but we just have to manage what we think would be the best team, given the players that have been working away with us, and also look at the impact that Brevis can have. So that's part of the discussion.”

The CSK head coach admitted that the team’s middle order has been struggling due to a lack of confidence. Fleming said that players are failing to convert starts into big scores, and the batting unit hasn't clicked this season, which has affected their overall performance.
Fleming signed off by saying, “It's a mix of things—maybe confidence is low. The IPL is tough. Players are getting starts in—20s and 30s, but we haven't converted those into big scores. We're missing that one 75+ innings that sets up the rest of the team. So, the batting order hasn't quite clicked, and we haven't had a single performance worthy of our "honors board" this year.
Overseas stars in the CSK squad
Notably, the bottom-ranked CSK has a strong overseas lineup for IPL 2025, featuring power hitters and strike bowlers. Apart from Dewald Brevis, they also have the experienced players Sam Curran, Nathan Ellis, Matheesha Pathirana, Jamie Overton, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Noor Ahmad in the mix in the overseas quota.
