Actor Matthew McConaughey, 55, and his wife, model/designer Camila Alves, 42, made a rare public appearance with all three of their children on Thursday night (April 24) for the Mack, Jack and McConaughey Gala at ACL Live in Austin, Texas.
McConaughey and Alves were married in 2012, though they had been together for six years at that point and had already welcomed their two older children. Son Levi, 16, was born in July 2008, and daughter Vida, 15, was born in January 2010. Son Livingston, 12, was born in December 2012.
When Vida was born, McConaughey wrote on his website, "‘Vida’ is Portuguese for ‘life’ and that’s what God gave us this morning. Camila’s recovering wonderfully, and we are both truly honored to welcome this little lady into our family. Thanks for all of your well wishes and prayers along the way, another blessed day, we give thanks.”
In a 2021 interview with Tim McGraw on the country singer's Beyond the Influence Radio show, McConaughey said that for him, being a father is "the greatest success you can be as a man."
"It was when I was eight years old is when it hit me. I wanted to be a father," said McConaughey, adding, "I remember in my eight-year-old mind going, 'That's when you've made it. That's when you become a sir. That's what success is.' It hit me then, and it's never left me as the paramount example of what being a sir or being the greatest success you can be as a man."
The family stepped out dressed to the nines for the annual gala to benefit McConaughey's Mack, Jack and McConaughey Foundation. The foundation's website says that it is "especially committed to maximizing the return to the community, specifically benefiting these organizations dedicated to children’s education, health and wellness."
The co-founders are McConaughey, recording artist Jack Ingram and football coaching legend Mack Brown. The gala is the foundation's "biggest fundraising night." It offered dozens of luxury items like safari tours and Maseratis for attendees to bid on, with all proceeds going toward the foundation's beneficiaries.
