Once the rain subsided this month, construction crews were out in force along some of the busiest roads in Ukiah as work was revived on the city’s Urban Core Project.
“We had been moving fairly slow because of the rain, such as the water main work on Main Street, but we will be back to some major impact on Gobbi Street, (where) we will be replacing the water line from basically Main Street to Orchard Avenue,” Public Works Director Tim Eriksen told the Ukiah City Council during his last update on the ambitious project.
“And that’s going to be very impactful,” Eriksen continued. “So I would just say that unless you are dying to see backhoes in operation and pipe flying everywhere, I would stay away from that, because it’s going to be very slow going; they’re going to have to be closing lanes.”
Describing the ongoing work as “six weeks of pain on Gobbi Street,” Eriksen advised avoiding the area if at all possible, and noting that “in the end, result will be three, perfectly paved roads.”
At the same meeting, the Ukiah City Council approved a change order “for the Urban Core Project to Ghilotti Construction Inc. for additional utility work to replace the Water Main on East Gobbi Street Between Main Street and Orchard Avenue in the amount of $1,584,000.”
According to the staff report for the agenda item, “the Urban Core Project is an expansive construction project that includes major utility replacement, road rehabilitation and pedestrian enhancements along the major corridors of Gobbi, Main and Perkins Streets. The project was awarded to Ghilotti Construction Inc. at the March 6, 2024, meeting, and the original contract amount was $13,138,330.43. Note: the original engineer’s estimate for the project was $14,384,000.”
Staff also explain that when “this project was designed, the water main on East Gobbi between Orchard and Main appeared to be in satisfactory condition and did not require replacement. However, as the contractor replaced other major utilities on Gobbi Street and staff were able to closely inspect some of the infrastructure, they discovered that the water main was in poor condition… and staff determined that it would be important to replace the aging water main now, while the road is already excavated and crews are mobilized, rather than risk a future failure on the soon-to-be new roadway. This work is estimated to cost approximately $1,584,000 in additional expenses. If approved, the contract total will be $14,868,252.87.”
The Ukiah City Council approved the change order as part of that meeting’s Consent Calendar.
