Remembering the Marin County high school crash victims

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. (KRON) -- Six Archie Williams High School students who were victims in a quadruple fatal crash in Marin County were identified by school officials on Monday.

All of the girls were between ages 14-16, and they were close friends at their San Anselmo school. Tamalpais Union High School District Superintendent Tara Taupier wrote, "We are deeply saddened to confirm the loss of four incredible young lives: 9th grader Olive Koren, and 10th graders Josalynn Osborn, Sienna Katz, and Ada Kepley. This is a time of immense pain for our school."

The tragedy happened on Friday night. California Highway Patrol officers said the six girls were riding in a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV when the SUV crashed into a tree on San Geronimo Valley Road.

A car veered into oncoming traffic, and the teen driver tried desperately to avoid colliding, a parent of one crash survivor told reporters. "They were going around a blind turn and another car veered into their lane. (The Volkswagen driver) swerved. She remembers hearing her screaming and then she swerved," the parent said.

Taupier identified the two crash survivors as Elsa Laremont Stranczek, 16, and Marley Barclay, 14. They were hospitalized in critical condition, school officials said.

Josalynn Osborn competed in wrestling at her high school. She is remembered for her "firecracker" spirit and big personality.

Osborn's family told the San Francisco Chronicle, "She was a firecracker with a bright smile and a personality that could light up a room. Her big dreams were as big as her personality and she had so much more to do in this life. We will live vicariously through her spirit until we meet again. She will be missed by many including her friends and her wrestling team at Archie and throughout the entire community."

A GoFundMe page states, "This is every mother’s worst nightmare. Christie and her sister Dylynn, along with the rest of the family, will need time and space to heal. Any donations will help to get this single mom through the hardest challenge of her life."

"Life will never be the same. Her time was way too short here," the page states.

Knowing she had you in her life brings us great comfort,” the family wrote. "We would like to thank the firefighters, law enforcement officers and all those who participated in the efforts to try to save our Ada and her friends. Marley Barclay survived the crash. Her parents shared more information about what happened.

Barclay's parents said their daughter left home at 6:50 p.m. and walked to downtown Fairfax to meet her friends. In downtown, she met up with the five girls. Around 7:15 p.m., the girls left Fairfax together traveling a Volkswagen Tiguan. The group was heading towards Woodacre, and the girls were all wearing seatbelts, Barclay's parents said.

The deadly crash happened at 7:30 p.m. in rural west Marin County on San Geronimo Valley Road, the CHP said.

"Marley remembers ... they were going around a blind turn and another car veered into their lane. (The Volkswagen driver) swerved. She remembers hearing her screaming and then she swerved," Barclay's mother, Jessica Glantz, told reporters on Monday.

The California Highway Patrol said one of the two survivors was the Volkswagen Tiguan driver. Barclay's parents said their daughter was not the driver.

The parents wrote, "As these girls and our entire community begins its healing journey, we strongly encourage everyone to standby as investigators work through the details of this tragedy. Wild speculation, rumor and conjecture is merely exacerbating what is already an excruciating process for all involved."

Barclay was pulled out of the car by a "guardian angel," her parents said.

"We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Good Samaritans who acted so bravely at the scene. We particularly want to thank the woman who pulled Marley from the vehicle and saved her life," the parents wrote. Glantz said the "guardian angel" held Barclay's hand until emergency crews arrived.

A GoFundMe page is raising donations to help cover Barclay's medical bills and recovery.

    Sophomore Elsa Laremont Stranczek, 16

Elsa Laremont Stranczek also survived. Superintendent Taupier wrote, "Elsa remains in critical condition, and Marley is stable but still in critical condition as well. Both are surrounded by the care and support of their families."

CHP Marin Area Commander Capt. Amy Newton said, "No words can ease the pain of such a devastating loss, and our hearts are with the entire community as they grieve. The CHP stands with our community during this time of sorrow and remains dedicated to thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to this tragedy."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contactthe CHP at 415-924-1100.
