Prep roundup: Valley Christian beats Cincinnati heavyweight to win tournament in Las Vegas

Archbishop Moeller of Cincinnati entered the All-Faiths Classic baseball final in Las Vegas ranked fourth in the country by MaxPreps.

Valley Christian wasn’t fazed.

    The San Jose powerhouse fell behind early on Thursday night but took charge in the fifth when Hunter Fujimoto, a Santa Clara University commit, ripped a three-run double down the left-field line to give the Warriors a five-run advantage.

    The lead grew to seven before the inning ended.

    Valley Christian held on from there to win 10-7, a huge victory for a team that has seven wins and a tie in its past eight games.

    Fujimoto finished 2 for 3 and also scored three runs. Colton Hadfield doubled and had four RBIs, and Logan Mull had two hits. Christian Navarez, Quinten Marsh and Christian Cabanas each drove in a run for the Bay Area News Group’s fifth-ranked team.

    The Warriors went 3-0-1 in Vegas and improved to 15-4-1 overall.

    Moeller is 8-1-1.

    No. 16 Alhambra 1, No. 15 Clayton Valley 0

    Alhambra senior Cameron Millar had another dominant outing, this time finishing with 10 strikeouts and walking one to narrowly lift the Bulldogs past visiting Clayton Valley in a Diablo Athletic League game.

    The Ugly Eagles managed just three hits against Millar, an Arizona commit who improved to 6-0 and kept his ERA at 0.00 through 40 innings.

    Morgan Tran scored in the third inning for Alhambra, which avenged a 6-1 loss at Clayton Valley on Tuesday.

    Alhambra is 11-5, 1-1. Clayton Valley dropped to 13-3, 1-1.

    No. 1 Serra 9, No. 13 Benicia 4

    Serra bounced back from a tough loss on Wednesday to De La Salle as Ian Josephson and Evan Bradshaw each had three hits in a victory over Benicia on the final day of the Boras Classic North tournament in El Dorado Hills.

    Peyton Rowles and Nash Rubins had two hits and an RBI apiece for Benicia, which fell to 11-4.

    Serra (17-4) trailed 4-0 before scoring three in the third and four in the fourth to take command.

    No. 4 De La Salle 10, Granite Bay 3

    Tyler Spangler hit a three-run homer and James McNutt and Brandon Vargas each had a hit and two RBIs as De La Salle finished the Boras Classic North tournament with a victory over Granite Bay.

    Graham Schlicht pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Spartans. He gave up an unearned run, struck out seven and allowed one hit. He walked one.

    De La Salle improved to 12-3. Granite Bay is 7-12.

    Freedom 3, No. 6 Pittsburg 0

    Gabe Jost scattered seven hits and struck out seven and Andrew Borrego had a hit — Freedom’s only one in the game — and an RBI to lead the visiting Falcons to a victory over Pittsburg in Bay Valley Athletic League play.

    The teams split their two-game series this week, leaving both tied for third behind Heritage and Liberty in the league standings.

    Freedom (8-7, 1-1) scored all of its runs in the fifth inning.

    Pittsburg walked four and was charged with three errors as the Pirates fell to 14-2, 1-1.

    No. 10 Heritage 13, Deer Valley 0

    Tyler Williams went 3 for 3 with a double, triple and home run and knocked in four runs as Heritage rolled on the road past Deer Valley in a BVAL game.

    Gio Cadena doubled and drove in three and six pitchers held Deer Valley to three hits and struck out 12 as the Patriots improved to 13-3, 2-0.

    Deer Valley is 0-8, 0-2.

    South San Francisco 13, Westmoor 1

    South City scored four in the first and five in the second to cruise past Westmoor in Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division play.

    Giovanni Bernal had four hits and drove in three runs and Adam Keith, Gabriel Martin, Josh Nabung and Yordonis Medina-Pineda each had two hits to lead the Warriors (12-4, 6-1).

    Emilio Oseguera pitched five scoreless innings for South City, allowing no hits and striking out 10. He walked one.

    Matthew Cote knocked in the only run for Westmoor (7-4, 3-3).

    Softball

    No. 17 California 8, Dougherty Valley 0

    Gabriella Nudo pitched a two-hitter and Alina Curiel had three hits, including a triple, and knocked in three runs to propel the visiting Grizzlies past Dougherty Valley in an East Bay Athletic League game.

    California upped its record to 11-5, 6-1. Dougherty Valley is 8-5, 3-4.

    No. 10 Castro Valley 24, Mt. Eden 0

    Giselle De Casas had two doubles and a triple, drove in six runs and scored three runs and Zaylee Gutierrez had three hits and four RBIs to lead Castro Valley to a non-league, run-rule rout of visiting Mt. Eden.

    Castro Valley ran its record to 12-3. Mt. Eden is 6-6.

    Hillsdale 5, San Mateo 2

    Mia DeMartini finished with three hits, including a triple, and had two RBIs and Sophia Shelton added two hits as Hillsdale prevailed over San Mateo in a PAL Bay Division game.

    Maddie Pena pitched a complete game for Hillsdale, which improved to 10-6-1, 3-3.

    Aliyah Scheller had two hits for San Mateo (10-5, 3-3).

    El Cerrito 29, Hercules 7

    El Cerrito stayed undefeated in TCAL Stone Division play, routing host Hercules in a game called after five innings because of the run rule.

    The Gauchos scored 13 in the first and six in the second to open a 19-6 lead. They finished the scoring with eight in the fifth.

    Freshman Arlie Tatum had four hits, scored five runs and knocked in two to lead El Cerrito (13-0, 8-0).

    Saraya de Alba and Ana Reyes-Del Castillo each had two hits for Hercules (8-4-1, 5-3-1).
