Frankfurt risk fine over fans’ behaviour towards Spurs players

FRANKFURT — Eintracht Frankfurt will face an investigation over their fans’ behaviour during the club’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

During the first half of the second leg, Spurs players repeatedly had objects thrown at them while taking corners.

After bottles, drinks and other projectiles were hurled at Pedro Porro, the stadium announcer at Deutsche Bank Park intervened and asked home supporters to stop.

However, Lucas Bergvall faced the same treatment taking corners from the other side in front of Frankfurt’s ultras.

The Bundesliga side now risk a fine if they are charged, with Uefa assessing disciplinary reports from officials.

Earlier this year Rangers were ordered to pay €4,500 (£3,860) for fans throwing objects against Fenerbahce, and €30,000 (£25,720) in total for an offensive banner and blocking walkways.

There were also sporadic incidents of fan trouble reported when Frankfurt played in north London in the first leg.

On the return in Germany, Ange Postecoglou’s side won 1-0 on the night – and 2-1 on aggregate – thanks to a Dominic Solanke penalty, won by James Maddison.

It was billed as do or die for Postecoglou, whose future has been the subject of scrutiny with Tottenham 15th in the Premier League after 17 defeats from 32 games.

Yet should they triumph in Europe they would qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Spurs face Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League last four, to be played on 1 May and 8 May, with Manchester United meeting Athletic Bilbao in the other semi-final.
