TRAVELERS in select cities may be able to pack more thanks to a major change made by TSA.
TSA announced that it will soon change its decades-long restrictions on the size of liquids passengers can carry in their non-checked bags.
Currently, those flying within the United States are restricted to 3.4-ounce liquid containers that can fit inside a quart-size clear plastic bag.
The counter-terrorism measure was set in 2006 to help prevent criminals from bringing explosives on planes, The New York Times reported.
The rule only applies to those bringing carry-on bags or personal items that are not being checked.
However, all of that will change as the TSA upgrades its computed tomography (CT) scanners, which scan the contents of your bag.
New CT scanners are being installed in some of the country’s busiest airports, allowing for full-sized items to be carried in any bag, The Mirror reported.
The scanners use 3D imaging technology to see the contents of a person’s bag and assess any potential threats.
These upgraded machines will affect 11 previously restricted items.
These items include: over-the-counter medications, prescription medicines in liquid form, wet batteries, live fish, biological specimens, and fresh eggs.
Parents can also now bring unrestricted children’s food and drinks, breast milk or baby formula, and water-filled baby teething toys.
Travelers who bought duty-free items, such as alcohol, at an airport shop can now bring them unrestricted in their carry-on as long as they are in a tamper-evident bag.
Shampoo, perfume, sunscreen, and body washes may also be added to the list of unrestricted items in the future.
Atlanta, JFK, and LAX airports are the first to test the new technology.
It’s important to remember that not every airport in the country has adopted the rule yet, so if a person isn’t flying out of one of the airports above, they are still restricted to the 3.4-ounce rule.
Most international airports also restrict the size of liquids a passenger can carry in a non-checked bag.
Despite the changes, the TSA still recommends following the 3.4-ounce rule no matter where travelers go.
Those wanting to find out more about the restrictions in the airport they’re flying into can download the TSA app and use the “What can I bring?” feature.
TSA changes
New TSA machines will lift size restrictions on the following items:
Over-the-counter medications Prescription medications in gel, liquid or aerosol form Ice packs or gel packs for medically necessary items Food and drink for infants and toddlers Wet batteries Live fish transported in water Biological specimens Breast milk or baby formula Liquid-filled teethers Duty-free items sealed in a tamper-evident bag Fresh eggsFlyers can also message the TSA on Facebook or X before flying to get more advice on what they should pack.
Christopher Murgia, TSA’s federal security director, previously gave helpful packing advice to passengers.
“It’s best to begin packing for travel with an empty bag, because that way travelers are less likely to see their carry-on bag trigger an alarm,” Murgia said.
“If you start with an empty bag, you know with certainty that you do not have anything prohibited inside.”
