Around 100 people protest in Santa Ana after suspected cat killer released on bail

Around 100 people gathered Sunday night, April 27, to protest a man who is out on bail after he was arrested on suspicion of hurting and killing more than a dozen cats in a Santa Ana neighborhood, police said.

Part of the crowd gathered around 7 p.m. for a vigil outside the home of 45-year-old Alejandro Oliveros Acosta, who was arrested last week after detectives served a search warrant at his home and found more than a dozen carcasses, said Yessenia Aspeitia, a spokesperson for the Santa Ana Police Department. Acosta was arrested on suspicion of felony animal abuse, and his bail was set at $20,000.

Photos of the vigil showed attendees holding signs that read “Stop killing” and “Justice for the cats.” Around a dozen candles were placed outside Acosta’s home, along with photos of cats.

Also around 7 p.m., protesters gathered outside the home of a relative of Acosta to protest Acosta’s release from jail after he posted bail.

At some point, protesters tried to break a fence outside the home to get onto the property, Aspeitia said.

Police intervened and tried to disperse the crowd. As of 9 p.m., about 30 protesters remained outside the home, Aspeitia said.

About 25 protesters also gathered outside Acosta’s home around 10 p.m. on Friday, April 25. When police arrived, the protest dispersed and no arrests were made, Aspeitia said.

An investigation into Acosta began after police received multiple reports over several weeks of a man attracting neighborhood cats in the area of Sullivan Street and McFadden Avenue to his property, where he would injure or kill them, police said.

Police don’t yet know the exact number of cats that were harmed or killed.

Investigators said they identified the suspect, who was caught on video seemingly luring and harming a cat behind a pickup truck.

Acosta is also suspected of abducting a 10-month-old Bengal Lynx kitten named Clubber from his Westminster home last month. Clubber was returned to his owner after she posted about the abduction on social media.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information to call investigators at 714-245-8416.
