Paul Finebaum: Quinn Ewers let ego dictate ‘a terrible decision’ to enter NFL Draft

The 2025 NFL Draft was not short of storylines, particularly at the quarterback position. Across the 3 days in Green Bay, notable names slid and tumbled down draft boards, including Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders and Texas star Quinn Ewers.

On his Monday appearance for “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Finebaum particularly reacted to the slide by Ewers that led the QB to come off the board in the 7th round. It’s an unlikely occurrence for the former No. 1 overall recruit and hyped prospect coming out of high school.

Finebaum was asked if Ewers’s slide is a cautionary tale for players moving forward when it comes to bypassing NIL dollars on the table for another college season in favor of the NFL Draft. The popular SEC Network host admitted it is cautionary, but only for players to make sure they have sound advice before making a decision, because Ewers simply wasn’t a great QB in 2024.

“I think it’s a cautionary tale that you ought to get really good advice. Listen, as somebody who saw Quinn Ewers a lot this past year, he just wasn’t that great,” described Finebaum. “Everyone knows that. I walked around the Cotton Bowl at halftime of the Ohio State game, and I can’t tell you how many Texas fans yelled at me, and when I walked over to say hello, they said ‘Why is this guy still playing quarterback?’ And by the way, that was the team that came within a play or two of playing in the national championship.”

So, what led Ewers to make the decision to enter the draft? Finebaum pinned that roll of the dice on Ewers’s ego, because it was evident the star QB would not be returning to Austin with Arch Manning waiting to take over the reins for Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.

“You have to be smart. He just let his ego get in the way, and he made a terrible decision. He would not have been at Texas (in 2025), we all know that,” Finebaum claimed. “They didn’t want him anymore. He would be somewhere like Carson Beck, making a lot of money, having a good time, and maybe working on his skills as opposed to being humiliated the way he was.”
