Denver Broncos extension talks likely to open up after NFL Draft

After concluding their run on identifying key additions in NFL Free Agency, the Denver Broncos are now focused on the NFL Draft before they look at potential contract extensions for players who are in the market of receiving one.

The Denver Broncos made some big moves this offseason that has a lot of national folks changing their tune about the direction in which they are heading. After adding players like Talanoa Hufanga, Dre Greenlaw, and Evan Engram, the Broncos became a team that instantly improved on paper.

Next up, the NFL Draft is on deck, which approaches in just a few weeks with Denver picking 20th overall. There has been a lot of conversations about contract extensions and what that timeline may look like for players like Courtland Sutton, Nik Bonitto, and Zach Allen — who are all in line to be paid.

Those conversations won’t likely take place or accelerate further until the NFL Draft, according to general manager George Paton, who spoke with the media on Monday morning.

“You’ve seen how we’ve done our business,” Paton said. “Typically, let’s get through the draft. We’ll be open to conversations after the draft and into the summer and sometimes into the season as well.”

Sutton seems like the team’s top-priority option, followed by Bonitto. The Broncos’ veteran wide receiver is entering the final year of his deal and emerged as Bo Nix’s top target last season. Keeping that connection together is important for a franchise that is trying to build this team around Nix the right way, and Sutton is a glue guy for keeping that continuity in place.

As a measure of good faith, it was reported on Sunday by 9News’ Mike Klis that Sutton will be reporting for the team’s voluntary offseason program.

There’s flexibility on the timing regarding Bonitto and Allen when it comes to extension talks — both are set to be free agents next season, and Denver is expected to retain them as well. With the market of their positions constantly changing, it will be interesting to see where the Broncos land on average annual value, length of contract, and guaranteed money.

Right now, the Broncos’ sole focus is on the draft and adding players they feel can start and develop into potential future starters down the road. Once they finalize their rookie class, the vision for the rest of the roster will fall into place and give the front office an idea of where they can begin their talks.
