‘Unbelievable’ – Radio host makes stunning U-turn on Gareth Southgate to Man United

talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein strongly opposed the prospect of Gareth Southgate being Manchester United manager – until now.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is facing increased pressure at Old Trafford following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Amorim has endured a poor opening season with UnitedGetty

He joined from Sporting Lisbon in November as the club sat 13th but just four points adrift of the Premier League top four.

But with one match remaining, United are in 16th and 26 points away from the European qualification spots.

Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag, who faced an uncertain future last season but remained in his post until the end of October.

Southgate, the then England manager, was a contender to replace him in March 2024, but United fan Goldstein voiced his complaints.

“I don’t care that he’s England manager, I don’t care. I will change my team… Old Trafford will be empty,” he said.

However, Goldstein has seemingly changed his tune and would be in favour of Southgate being appointed at United.

“If you get a manager that has a worse record than Paul Jewell when he took Derby down, it’s his fault,” he said about Amorim on Drive.

“He’s picking the players, he’s picking the formation, he’s picking the tactics, he’s making the substitutes, it’s him.”

Ex-England striker Darren Bent then asked if he would take Southgate at United and, after a slight hesitation, he said: “Yeah. That’s what he’s made me do.”

“How anti-Southgate was I?” Goldstein added. “I’d take him, that’s an unbelievable turnaround, unbelievable question, I’d take him.”

Amorim has won only 16 of his 41 matches in charge of United across all competitions, with just six of those coming in the Premier League.

They haven’t won in the league since a 3-0 victory at Leicester City on March 16, with eight fixtures following since then.

Wednesday night’s Europa League final loss means they missed the opportunity to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

United will not have any European football at all in the 2025/26 campaign as they close in on their worst ever Premier League finish.

talkSPORT understands Amorim retains the confidence of the hierarchy and will be backed in the summer despite defeat to Spurs.
