‘I never did that’ – Gareth Bale reveals unlikely career regret that left bucket list incomplete

Gareth Bale achieved things that most footballers can only dream of but even he feels he missed on some lifelong career goals.

The five-time Champions League winner scored 225 goals for club and country during his illustrious career.

Those strikes were spread across spells with Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LAFC as well as a record 111 caps for Wales.

Bale also won 19 trophies as a player but has admitted there is one thing he wishes he had done.

The former Wales captain told talkSPORT that he regrets failing to score from the halfway during his career.

Asked about his best ever goal, having famously scored an overhead kick against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final, Bale said on Drive: “Obviously the occasion does come into play.

“But if you take that out I think just scoring an overhead kick, it’s always quite a cool thing.

“I’ve always wanted to score from the halfway line. I actually never did that.

“Funnily enough I actually hit the post from the halfway line at this stadium that I’m at now. It was one of those bucket list things to do.”

The 35-year-old had been speaking from the San Mames in Bilbao ahead of the Europa League final.

Bale had been preparing to provide punditry for TNT Sports’ coverage of his old side Spurs’ clash with Manchester United.

He previously struck the post from 50 yards out with an audacious effort at the stadium back in March 2015.

His effort agonisingly bounced back off the woodwork during a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao for Real Madrid.

Despite not scoring from his own half, Bale admitted he was able to tick off other parts of his football bucket list.

The former winger added: “It was just one of those things you kind of want to do and experience.

“I always wanted a red card so I did that a few times just to experience it though.

“It’s one of those things I always wanted to be able to do. But halfway line at this stadium was one I didn’t.”

Bale was sent off three times during his career, with the first red card coming for Spurs against Stoke in October 2008.

He was later dismissed twice during his nine years with Real Madrid, including a straight red card against Las Palmas in 2017.

The incident saw Bale receive a two-match ban after being sent off for violent conduct during a 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
