‘Family Matters’ Star Jaleel White Reveals He Attended Public School While Playing Steve Urkel

Jaleel White had a very unique childhood experience.

During the TGIF-themed panel at 90s Con in Hartford, Conn., on Saturday, March 29, the 48-year-old actor revealed that he attended public school the entire time he played fan favorite Steve Urkel on the popular sitcom Family Matters.

White explained that he often has fans tell him that he was an integral part of their childhood since Family Matters was a television staple from 1989 to 1998.

“I think that we might have had very similar childhoods,” he reflected, “because I went to public school the entire time I did that show, and we didn't have these camera phones back then, and my mom was really, really passionate about me staying in public school.”

According to White, “We’d shoot three episodes, and I’d go back on hiatus. I was on a schedule of three [shows], school, two [shows], school, three [shows], school. So I was constantly popping back in, and then in the spring, I was there the entire time — that’s when reruns used to exist.”

During his time in public school, White even played on his high school basketball team, with the Family Matters team changing “the entire shooting schedule” so that he could take part in the sport.

90s Con host and panel moderator Jenna Leigh Green, who played Libby Chessler on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, pointed out “that was again at a time when people were willing to do that, to work with young people,” adding: “We were meant to be professionals. We were meant to be kids, but some of us just did other things, so the fact that they were willing to work with you is really, really [great].”

Said White: “It was weird, though, because I felt like I was learning these life lessons backwards. I probably learned a lot of things in college that I should have learned in high school — on a social level — but then I was interacting with adults on like this insanely high level.”

“I legitimately would have breakfast at the Four Seasons with [Disney CEO] Bob Iger and my dad and an agent, and then I'm off to regular public school hours later. So when I just look back at the opportunities, and you know what should have been, what could have been."

He added, “It was just great to get it out in the book [the 2024 memoir Growing Up Urkel], and I never would have imagined that all these years later that people would still be emotionally so connected to the 90s.”

90s Con is taking place March 28-30 at the Connecticut Convention Center.
