FORMER NFL first-round pick Trey Lance is currently in a conundrum as the Dallas Cowboys have appeared to make a decision with him.
The ex-third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is currently a free agent after playing in just four games for the Cowboys last season.
Free agency began earlier this month, and Lance remains without a team.
Lance’s future is murky after being a third-string quarterback in Dallas.
And the 24-year-old is seemingly expected not to return to the Cowboys due to comments made by Jerry Jones.
Last month, the longtime NFL owner told The Dallas Morning News that drafting a quarterback is “one of our goals.”
“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Jones said.
“I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey.
“It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first.
“They always go so much higher than what you think.”
The Cowboys also let veteran Cooper Rush join the Baltimore Ravens, which all but hinted that Lance would not re-sign with America’s Team.
Lance has been a disappointment in the NFL after being a highly touted prospect.
The 49ers swung a trade with the Miami Dolphins to trade up to No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Lance.
The North Dakota state product only appeared in eight games over two years with San Francisco.
During that span, Lance posted 797 passing yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions, along with 235 rushing yards and one rush touchdown.
Before the 2023 campaign, the 49ers traded Lance to the Cowboys and he didn’t play in one game during that season.
In 2024, Lance hardly got an opportunity before the final game of the campaign.
He replaced Rush against the Washington Commanders and completed 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Lance could get another shot in the NFL, but he likely won’t receive an opportunity to start for a franchise.
If the NFL doesn’t work out, there’s always the Canadian Football League.
It was reported by TSN that the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders added Lance to their negotiation list this week.
