Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton thrilled home fans at Indian Wells Monday, overcoming challenging desert winds to secure spots in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Fritz, a Torrey Pines High School alum and the 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion, rallied from a slow start to defeat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Looking ahead to his next match against Britain’s Jack Draper, Fritz acknowledged the challenge.
“It’s going to be a tough match. I think it’s a tough draw to get him in the round of 16 as a top-four seed. He’s a very good player,” Fritz said. “I think he’s probably better than his ranking is … we have had some tight ones.”
Shelton, 22, showcased power and resilience as he defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-5 despite battling blisters on his hand. Down a break in the second set, Shelton surged back by winning the final four games, sealing the victory with one of his eight aces. He will face fellow American and San Diego native Brandon Nakashima, a High Bluff Academy alum, in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, in the evening session, two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-4 to advance.
