How Starbucks’ Major Rewards Program Change Affects Its Most Loyal Customers

If you’re like me, you’re willing to spend more money online shopping in order to get free shipping, even if the shipping would have cost less than the additional items purchased in order to get the “free” shipping.

The same goes with restaurant rewards–I’m much more likely to frequent a spot if I can rack up points that can then be cashed in for freebies. But what happens when the terms of the rewards system change?

That’s what Starbucks fans are currently facing, as the coffee giant announced a major change to its rewards program, tweaking how many “stars” you can acquire with every purchase.

Pros know that you can get additional stars if you pay via a gift card or a pre-loaded Starbucks card, racking up two stars for every dollar you spend, as opposed to one star per dollar when you pay with cash or a credit or debit card.

The other easy way to get extra stars (outside of challenges, star promotions, and double star days) is to bring in a reusable cup, which currently gets you 25 stars plus ten cents off of your purchase.

Unfortunately, the salad days are over, as beginning on June 24, instead of getting 25 stars for bringing in a reusable cup, you’ll get double stars on your entire purchase, as outlined in the brand’s rewards terms and conditions, reports Allrecipes.

This means that unless you’re spending $12.50 per visit, you won’t be able to rack up as many stars as before with your reusable cup. In theory, if you bring a reusable cup and put in a large order for a group (or go on an all cake pop diet), you’d be able to get a lot of stars from the order.

But for customers who stop by Starbucks for smaller purchases like a regular cup of coffee, it will become much harder to get those freebies.
